HANDY JOB HUNTER FOR WRITERS
ISSUE #1 (3/2003)
******************************************************
Compiled by Michael Arnzen

MISSION:

Welcome to the first public issue of this list of links and tips. This newsletter has a simple purpose: to help you find a job applying your skills as a writer. Whether you're a graduating English major who hasn't got a clue about what you're going to do with your life or a full-time freelance writer looking for more opportunities to get a steady paycheck -- or even someone hoping to change jobs or advise others -- I hope this document can help you somehow.

I began compiling this material basically as a "tipsheet" to give the students I advise at Seton Hill University. I wanted to provide them with as much help as I could to get them started on the road to a writing career. The tipsheet grew and grew, and often needed updating as I found new sources or web sites changed. On the surface, it's nothing more than a collection of web links. But they're links I had to go out and find. Most writing-oriented sites are focused on one area -- genre fiction, magazine writing, book publishing, newspaper journalism, etc. -- ignoring the basic fact that many full-time freelancers need to multitask to earn a liveable income. On the other hand, many freelance writers work dead-end jobs, neglecting the rewarding opportunities for employment in their field that are out there. The idea behind this document is to offer a way for writers to find new ways of making a living and getting published. For now, it's comprised mostly of web links. This may
change in the future, but for now there's plenty to work with.

Journalists and Creative Writers often share the same job pool. The major difference is that journalists are often looking for full time staff writing positions involving nonfiction work, while creative writers often are looking for freelancing opportunities that allow room for more artistic expression. I've organized what follows by those two professions, but no matter which side you lean toward, you should thoroughly search for jobs in BOTH categories because you never know what you might find. This is especially the case for people who want to become EDITORS -- you could foreseeably become the fiction editor for a news magazine, for example. I've also included a listing of the generic standby job hunt engines on the Internet. Keep your eyes peeled for links to other job resources as you surf.

Surf around through all these links to get started on the journalism job hunt. Not all will be appropriate but you might find links to new places. Remember to pull out useful keywords as you encounter them and use those to enter into search engines and whatnot as you go (e.g., you see a job for "lifestyle features copyeditor" and that's you're dream job! Then use that phrase in google.com or any job bank search engine and see what turns up).

I have privileged FREE services. If you're willing and able to pay for exclusive job listings, you can use these links as springboards to find those services. I have also included sites I'm partial to, because they match my primary interests in the horror and science-fiction genres as well as academic writing.

This document will continue to be irregularly updated -- roughly once every month-and-a-half. Please share it with others looking for work. If you cite it, credit me. If you received this from a friend, I recommend you sign up to the mailing list to always have the most recent version at gorelets.com:

"Success is a continuing process. Failure is a stoppage....You fail only if you stop writing...Any man who keeps working is not a failure. He may not be a great writer, but if he applies the old-fashioned virtues of hard, constant labor, he'll eventually make some kind of career for himself as a writer." -- Ray Bradbury
