GOOGLING FOR WRITERS

Google.com [ http://www.google.com ] is clearly the web's most popular search engine -- so popular, in fact, that the term "google" has become a verb in common parlance (see the dictionary entry at the fascinating site, The Word Spy [ http://www.wordspy.com ]). If you're looking for writing work, you're probably googling like crazy just fine on your own. But here are some tips and trivia about googling you might not have realized, which might help you on the hunt for writing-related opportunities.

FRESH STUFF
Did you know you can limit your search to a particular range of dates? With one extra click you can launch google's "Advanced Search" feature [ http://www.google.com/advanced_search ]. This screen includes a drop-down menu that allows your search to only return web pages updated in the last 3 months, 6 months, or year. If you're looking for new webzines to publish your work, or researching only recent trends, this function is really useful. But what do you do if you only want to see the pages updated since, say, yesterday?

There's an even better way to refine your googling to dig up only the most recently indexed pages: "GooFresh" [ http://www.researchbuzz.com/toolbox/goofresh.shtml ], from the good folks at Research Buzz. Utilizing underappreciated and little understood codes for "daterange" searches, GooFresh can turn up sites added or indexed on google.com today, yesterday, within the last week, or last month. You can even set up your own script, like this one that will search for "writer wanted" postings in the previous week, whenever it's run: [ http://www.researchbuzz.com/cgi-bin/goofresh.cgi?query="writer wanted"&datemod=7 ]. I learned about this neat feature through the google fetishists at Smoogle [ http://smoogle.info ], who explain how to search internetwide for recently posted writer's guidelines in their article at [ http://smoogle.info/2003/02/14.html ].

Another timesaving option -- which I have not tested, so I can't vouch for it -- is to have Google Alert [ http://www.googlealert.com ] run the same search for you every day and e-mail you the results!

SHORTCUTTING IT
Once you land on google's main page, you can immediately and quickly search...in fact, the speed and efficiency of its front page is its primary draw. As the page loads, type your keywords in the form and press the return key. That will automatically launch the search -- no need to fumble with your mouse. If you're good at your keyword choices, you can probably put even more blind faith in google.com. Type your keywords in the form, and then hit the tab key twice before hitting the return key. That will auto-select the "I'm Feeling Lucky" option, that takes you to the most likely page. And it typically works.

SPEED UP YOUR SEARCHING
If your google search turns up a long list of pages and you're pretty sure you want to browse every one in a hunt to find what you're looking for, how do you do it? I try to think of the google results as an index page, akin to a list of favorites. Using Internet Explorer with Windows, I'm in the habit of right-clicking on the links and selecting "Open in New Window" as I make my way down the list, browsing one page after another.

There are other "keyboard shortcuts" you can use to save you the trouble of mousing around or losing your place. You can simply hit the "backspace" key and return to the search form or the previous google page.

You can also have google do a lot of the work of navigation for you. There's a little-known but very cool google browser called the "Google Viewer" that you can beta test right now online at: [ http://labs.google.com/gviewer.html ]. The Google Viewer performs your search, but then loads the results, one page after another, the way a radio tuner might "scan and seek" from one station to the next. If you have the patience to preview every page that pops up, it's really neat!

OWN IT, LOVE IT, USE IT
If you use Internet Explorer, you can install a menubar that will always be available at the top of your screen, waiting for you to type in a search term [ http://toolbar.google.com ]. Or you can make google.com your main home page whenever you load your web browser [ http://www.google.com/mgyhp.html ]. To keep up with other tricky google business, keep your eyes on the official "All About Google" page [ http://www.google.com/about.html ] or the more fascinating, unofficial one at [http://www.axandra.com/news/google-resource-page.htm ]. The more you burrow around, the more oddities you'll find, like the fascinating "Google Zeitgeist" [ http://www.google.com/press/zeitgeist.html ] or the puzzling Elgoog [ http://elgoog.rb-hosting.de/ ]. You can also compare results using the nutty Googlefight [ http://www.googlefight.com ].

JOB HUNTING WITH GOOGLE
You can, of course, run simple searches for job listings and guidelines through Google's general or advanced search form. But I bet you didn't know that Google has its own sub-directory dedicated to job hunting. I recommend it as a launchpad for your employment search needs [ http://directory.google.com/Top/Business/Employment/Job_Search/ ]. Job-Hunt.Org, recently ran a decent article on how to get the most out of "Googlizing" employment searches [ http://www.job-hunt.org/article_googleize.shtml ]. I recommend you don't over-rely on Google alone to search for jobs; it's too easy to get lost in the millions of websites, and often there are more direct means toward the end of landing a job.
