“The Uncanny & The Abject in Horror Fiction”
A course taught by Michael Arnzen for HORROR UNIVERSITY sponsored by Seton Hill University’s MFA in Writing Popular Fiction
Registration for my next Horror University course has opened up!
This two hour workshop will unravel the psychological theories of the Uncanny and the Abject. Together, we will explore how authors frighten, disturb and disgust the reader through analysis and open discussion. The class will involve short writing activities that will allow you to explore and practice the different techniques writers summon when triggering revulsion or conjuring dread.
ABOUT HORROR U:
Overall, from June 12th to June 15th, HORROR UNIVERSITY will present nine live, in-person workshops at StokerCon 2025 in Stamford, Connecticut. “Horror U” is designed for horror writers interested in refining their writing, learning new skills and techniques, exploring new writing formats, or better understanding the genre. These workshops are taught by some of the most experienced voices in horror.
REGISTRATION DETAILS:
The course costs $65 usd (in addition to other StokerCon registration tickets) for access to the live event. HWA members pay only $55 and there may be bundled course discounts available. See the Horror University webpage at StokerCon for more information, or register directly via eventbrite.

p.s. Note that this is a “live” and updated version of a class that I taught during the Covid years online, which was available on the HU teachable website (but has since gone dark, while HWA considers moving to a new instructional platform). At StokerCon 2025, the class runs LIVE and is NOT livestreamed. Subsequent video recordings may or may not be subsequently available — I will update this page if I learn more, but I assume they will not and this may be your only opportunity to take the class.
p.s.s. For my other programming at StokerCon 2025 in Stamford (such as panels and a live reading time slot), see my event page.
