Honored!

Honored!

This week, my essay on the kitschy horror movie, The Tingler was shortlisted as a finalist for the Bram Stoker Award in the short non-fiction category, and I'm elated and humbled by the support of the HWA for my film criticism, and enormously pleased to appear alongside such smart and creative people across the final ballot. To be honored for my academic work on horror cinema means a lot to me. The Horror Writers Association is voting now, with the award to be given at StokerCon 2025 in Stamford. I'll be there! As noted in a previous blog post, my…

The Goreletter Vol. 11, #1 was delivered to mailing list subscribers on 8/2/16 @ 3am est. Astoundingly, this is the 14th year that I've been publishing The Goreletter, which won the Bram Stoker Award (in the now-defunct category of "Alternative…

Photos from World Horror Con 2015

I am so glad that I attended the 25th World Horror Convention & 2015 Bram Stoker Awards Banquet in Atlanta, GA, this past weekend. I think I was laughing the whole time, giddy with the good times and gore. It was great to reunite with so many old friends (I actually attended the very first WHC, 25 years ago!), and as usual, made several new buddies, too. There were something like sixteen Seton Hill MFA program students, alums or faculty colleagues in attendance, a barrel of Raw Dog Screaming Press associates, and hundreds of gibbering weirdos, which meant I always…

Many Genres, Many Awards…and One Great Year for Our Writing Guide!

As the writer's guide I co-edited with Heidi Ruby Miller -- Many Genres, One Craft: Lessons in Writing Popular Fiction -- comes to its first year anniversary, I was happy to learn this morning that it just won another book award. Here are the accolades I know about so far: Winner, "Business: Writing and Publishing" category, 2012 International Book Awards. Winner, "Education/Academic" category, 2012 Next Generation Indie Book Awards. Winner, General Non-Fiction Award. 2011 London Books Festival Award. Listed 5th in "This Year's Ten Most Terrific Writing Books" by The Writer magazine (Dec 2011). Finalist, "Business: Writing and Publishing" category.…

Instigation Parody at the Stoker Award Banquet

At the recent Bram Stoker Awards ceremony in New York, the banquet's emcee, author Jeff Strand, plotted the following little skit which we delivered to everyone's surprise, shortly before he introduced the presenters of the award for Outstanding Achievement in Long Fiction. I was honored to be a part of the joke in this parody of the goreletter's Instigation column, which features "twisted prompts for sicko writers." Here's the script from our skit. Although I wrote the prompts below, the idea was all Jeff's and he did a fantastic job all night long. Be sure to drop by his website…
