Photos – Launch of Jan 12 Writing Pop Fiction MFA residency #shuwpf

Just a few random shots taken during tonight's opening orientation for the writer's residency at Seton Hill.  I was so caught up in conversations and greetings that I regret I neglected to take more photos.  I'll try to get more and post as the week progresses.  Workshops, classes, and thesis presentations will last till next Wednesday.  Tomorrow I teach a course in "Critiquing and Clarity" in addition to a module on pop culture theory, following an early morning discussion of the Mystery genre, using Jo Nesbo's book THE SNOWMAN to focus our discussion.

Photos from Frostburg Small / Regional Press Fair 2011

Had fun in Frostburg this weekend for the 2011 Western Maryland Small and Regional Press Festival. The fun folks I got to hang with are in the photos: my co-editor for Many Genres, Heidi Ruby Miller and I sat on a panel with Courtney Ruffner (editor, Florida English) on "Publishing Basics"; authors Jason Jack Miller, Jessica McHugh and Post Mortem Press editor Eric Beebe and I all sat on a panel about science fiction, fantasy and horror; and two of my publishers were on hand -- Jennifer Barnes and John Edward Lawson from Raw Dog Screaming Press, and Cynthia McCloud…

Many Genres authors at Confluence 2011

Speculative fiction authors from our writing guide, Many Genres, One Craft: Lessons in Writing Popular Fiction, were all over the place at the Confluence sf/f/h convention this weekend. Coeditor Heidi Ruby Miller and I hosted a 'literary beer' talk about the book that was a highlight, among other things. Here are some photos from the book signing event. In the photos, the MGOC writers are the ones wearing the buttons: Heidi Ruby Miller, Jason Jack Miller, Lawrence Connolly, Diane Turnshek, and myself. (Timons Esaias was there too but eluded my camera.)

Confluence 2011

Various photos I took at Pittsburgh's annual science fiction, fantasy and horror convention, Confluence, this past weekend. I'll post shots of the 'many genres' book signing at the con in the next post. See if you can figure out which one is the wax figure. Otherwise, you'll see: Lawrence Connolly, Chris Ferrier, Ann Kopchik, William H. Keith, Eric Beebe, Paul Anderson, KT Pinto, Chris Pisano, John Alfred Taylor, Mary Turzillo, Brea Ludwigson, Robert J. Sawyer, the Alpha gang.

Photos from the Alpha Workshop Readings

See the full gallery on Posterous I enjoyed dropping by the fiction readings sponsored by the Alpha Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Workshop for Young Writers this evening in Greensburg, PA. Writers who instruct in the workshops this year included David Levine, Scott Johnson and David Barr Kirtley -- all pictured here. The book I co-edited, Many Genres, One Craft, was also sold at the event, where contributor and Alpha guru Diane Turnshek walked among us. An entertaining night! Congrats on ten years of workshops, Alphans!
