2009 Stoker Award Winning Books

The 2009 Bram Stoker Award winners were announced by the Horror Writer's Association at World Horror Convention in Brighton, England, last weekend. I read almost all of these titles and I can vouch that they are superlative reads. (In fact, I lauded Lucy Snyder's poetry-winning book here in The Goreletter). See the HWA's announcement for a complete list...congratulations to all the winners! I contributed work to two of the books (though the editors, not me, rightfully get the awards!). These are pretty amazing books to be a part of, so I want to celebrate them here (and share some breaking…

Book Trailer — The Writer’s Workshop of Horror

I am hearing reports that Writer's Workshop of Horror has already gone into it's 2nd printing. This collection of advice from today's top authors of terror -- from Brian Keene to Joe Lansdale to Michael Laimo to many more -- is a virtual college classroom in a book when it comes to the craft of the crypt. I'm recommending it to all my students in our MFA in Writing Popular Fiction program at SHU. But even if you're not a writer, where else, I ask, can you get such "behind the scenes" insight from your favorite authors? Visit the order…

Write Horror at Seton Hill University

How cool is my University? The above image is a sneak preview of an ad campaign they'll be releasing soon for our graduate program in Writing Popular Fiction, where students can earn a Master's degree for writing a horror novel. Instructors include luminaries in the horror/fantasy genre you might be familiar with, like Tim Waggoner, Gary Braunbeck, Timons Esaias and Lawrence C. Connolly and many others. We're currently brainstorming "taglines" to go with the above image (like: "Don't fear commercial success.") so if you want to recommend any (before my meeting with the powers that be on 1/28), go right…

Horror Writing Courses & Academics in 2008

This morning I saw that Boing Boing posted news about the Alpha SF Workshop for Teens -- and it occurred to me that I've been remiss about announcing that I'll be teaching at this writer's workshop for young genre fans this year, alongside Tamora Pierce, Timothy Zahn, and the very cool Chris McKitterick. Application deadline is March 1st. I will also be leading a Flash Fiction writing workshop at Context SF Convention in September. It was exceptionally cool to be the Horror Guest of Honor at Context last year; this year's guest horror writer is Brian Keene, and other horror…

On Writing Horror

The book, On Writing Horror, is among the best "how-to" books for writers working in the genre of fear, and a newly revised edition has just been published. Any writer who hopes to terrify their readers should pick up a copy of this newly updated edition of the classic textbook in writing and marketing horror fiction. Written by members of the Horror Writer's Association (contributors include Stephen King, Joyce Carol Oates, David Morrell, Harlan Ellison, Jack Ketchum, Tom Piccirilli and many more!), the book covers a surprisingly wide range of issues with insight -- from how to craft monster stories…
