FOUR years…really? Where did you go, Arnzen?

Well, I was not aboard missing Flight MH370, as many at the time believed. Back in 2017, Trump was inaugurated, giving Planet Earth a collective concussion, so you probably forgot a lot about what happened. You probably missed the “fake news” reports about my adventure. I was assisting the DEA in the capture of El Chapo down south, when Hurricane Irma swept me up and dropped me down in lost continent of Zealandia, where I have basically lived underwater ever since, blowing musical bubbles from my refashioned copper Smoke Helmet. Luckily, this device also worked as a respiratory mask for when I resurfaced.

And I’m glad you’re still here, too. Let’s rock!

1. “Censored” Mask (a black bar that actually does bleep and then constricts the wearer’s throat, a la Darth Vader, until the wearer falls to his or her knees and weeps or dies, preferably on the floor of the US Capitol)

I’m not about to try to play catch up. It’s been too long. Most of the publishing news I have to share right now is leaked in those videos, but I want to call attention to two non-fiction releases of note:

First is that the next installment of the great Exploring Dark Short Fiction Series (#6) will cover the work of UK horror grandmaster Ramsey Campbell! Look for the release of it in late Spring/early Summer from Dark Moon Books. It contains a handful of selected works, a complete bibliography, an interview with the editor, an essay by the author… and I contribute mini-essays on each of the short stories included in these primers, along with a lengthy essay exploring why the author matters. Other volumes in the series I’ve contributed to as academic advisor include a diverse roster of greats: Steve Rasnic Tem, Nisi Shawl, Kaaron Warren, Jeffrey Ford and Han Song. Secondly, news just leaked that I am writing the introduction to Tim Waggoner’s sequel to his massively successful guidebook for horror writers – a workbook for Writing the Dark! ON HIS HEELS
I’m quite sorry to be the one to bear the bad news. But we have to let you go. We were lucky to have you as our in-house pest exterminator. A lot of places can’t say they have one of those, but you’ve been a true asset to our firm.

Your placement of traps has been uncannily successful. You have cleared out hundreds of flying insects, and I commend you for it. Even the boss, Mr. Cardick, despite his sneering demeanor, had the good graces to mentioned how clean the premises seem to be lately, without them. A good word from that codger is a badge of honor! You also have had the courtesy of working quietly, mostly in the dead of night when no one else can be troubled by seeing you perform your morbid job of eradicating the infestation of our building, removing so many blowflies and other annoying little bugs.

You’ve been an exceptionally hard worker, but beyond that, I would have to say that you have great networking skills, and I mean that in the truest sense. You also multitask eight times as well as our peers.

You are such an asset to the firm, it is a pity that I have to relieve you of your job. But the order comes from above. Mr. Cardick walked into one of your webs and has asked me to dispatch you, without notice. You were such a good coworker, Mr. Spider. I’m going to make this quick, with the heel of my shoe. But don’t worry about Mr. Cardick. The flies will still get him, and I promise it will be very, very soon. And then I will be the boss.

But I am sorry to report that, at present, there is unfortunately nothing further I can do for you, except remember you fondly, and borrow a few lessons from your playbook as I climb the corporate ladder.

Sorry, old chap. You are hereby – terminated.
